hi to all.had a problem with g

hi to all.had a problem with gummed up carbi/s on 1996 mod mariner 4strk. pulled carbi/s off dis/mntld and soaked in carbcleaner washed in h2o and clean dried with comp air. reassmbled and fitted back on engine fired up engine and it ran perfect. engine will only run with the engine cover off and bogs down and stalls with it fitted. any suggestions as to why. the carb butterfly adjstmnt screws on each carb was not disturbed. thanks jim
 
Maybe as the jets were gummed

Maybe as the jets were gummed the mixture might have been made more rich to get enough fuel. Now they are clean it may be running rich.
