"I just picked this up and it

"I just picked this up and it has not been started in approx. 2 yrs. I am not a boat mechanic but can turn a wrench and have worked on many a car.

Now, the motor is free (spins) and I have ordered the service manual for it. Other than that I don't have a clue where to start. Anyone want to help me fire this thing up?

Where do I start?"

"just came back in from scrapi

"just came back in from scraping it. I had the cover off and saw 3 wires off the motor on the starboard side. I may have to track down where they go to get spark. What is the compression suppose to be on this? Also, I don't know if it matters, but the registration expired in 03, so now I'm thinking it may have been sitting that long"

"Oh boy...
The wires are gonn

"Oh boy...
The wires are gonna have to be tracked down, absolutly.

Compression is usually about 100lbs, a little less in smaller engines. More important, is that the cylinders have equal compression within a few pounds of each other.

Having an '03 sticker on it may mean that the previous owner registered the thing in '00, sometimes peaple loose intrest in the first year, so it may have even sat since then. Now you might be looking at 6 or even 7 years of sitting..."

"I just purchased a Johnson 50

"I just purchased a Johnson 50 horse outboard with a boat. It is a 2000 model # 50PLSSM. It is a 2 stroke and I am trying to find out if it meets or conforms to 2001 EPA requirements. There is a tag that states it conforms to year____ EPA requirements but after the word year is blank. Can some one tell me if this motor meets 2001 EPA requirements.
Thanks, Vern"
