Hello, new to forum, new to outboards. I have 50els71s and it started in gear. I thought neutral safety switch prevented that from happening. Am I wrong and have a bad switch or is this a suicide motor? I heard about this happening on older Mercury's.

The gearcase in in FORWARD when motor is stopped.------It shifts to neutral after crankshaft turns 1 revolution with the starter.----The prop may still spin in neutral on a hose.-----Use a stick on the prop to see if it is in neutral.-----There is a safety switch that prevents cranking if throttle is open too far.

You may not realize, but this is an electric shift outboard, if it stays in forward gear after the engine starts, Racer will walk you through the troubleshooting process, including making sure it has no water in the gearcase and it has the correct gear oil in it, specific to electric shift Johnson/Evinrude motors.
