502 XL will not accelerate past 2000 rpms

Hi folks,

I have a 1997 41 ft. Silverton convertible with twin Crusader 502 XL throttle body injected engines. They have about 720 hours on them in mostly freshwater. Let me start off by saying the boat hasn't left the dock much in the last 2 years. I went to use it a couple of weeks ago, and my starboard engine will not throttle up above 2000 to 2100 rpms when underway. Last time I used it, which was about a month ago, it ran fine. While at the dock, it Will easily go above 3k rpms. It's not missing or sputtering, there's just nothing there under a load. So far, I've changed the distributor cap, rotor, plugs (proper gap), wires, both fuel filters and the problem still persists. Fuel has been properly stabilized, doesn't have a foul smell, and the port engine runs fine. It steams out the exhaust, while the port engine does not. It doesn't overheat.

I'm going to test the fuel pressure at the rail next, but am wondering if anyone has an idea of what it could be. Any suggestions are appreciated.t

Thanks!

Fuel pressure is essential....but I'd think its lack of timing advance....

As you've noted, the engine rev'ing up under no-load doesn't mean much....good news is the timing advance can be checked under 'no-load'...

Fuel pressure at the dock on the port engine was 19. Fuel pressure on the problem engine was 15 at the dock. When we drove it, it dropped to 10 and as low as 5. Can I assume it's the fuel pump? Btw, I drove it with the gas cap off... Thanks.

Problem fixed. Turned out the black puck screen was so clogged up fuel couldn't get through. I'm going to make it a habit to clean the pucks every couple of times out. Easy enough to do...

glad its resolved....now you know what low fuel pressure does....

If the problem keeps occurring, you may want to get your tanks 'polished'....to eliminate the crud
