"I've got some really sticky, thick black oil (grease?)on the side of the cylander block. Any idea where it comes from and what needs to be done about the source?

look up under flywheel at stat

look up under flywheel at stator or look at regulator /rectifier gas and oil ar thin sounds like potting material on electronics .you did not state a serial # or year does this one have a distributor hanging upside down if so there are grease fittings on the collor

"The SN is 4078639. There is this oil right up to but not under the fly wheel. I found a drop that looked a little green, and I did have a tank of over oiled fuel not long ago. I'm starting to think that might be the problem, except for the sticky drark character of some of it."
