50 Mercury Four Stroke Guardian System Mode

While out fishing in backwater yesterday, a problem started with the Guardian system. The motor goes into low power mode after the temperature beeper. This started happening after raising the motor to get past a log and sucking some debris in the cooling system. The water hole continues to pump a full stream.

This same problem happened last year and I had to take it in to be cleaned out. The boat motor mechanic said something had to be cleaned out but I'm not sure what it was. Could it be debris touching the sensor? Thermostat etc? Where should I start to check, I don't really want to have it at the shop for 2 weeks and out another 150 for something simple like trash somewhere.

Any ideas on where to start?

I had a sumilar problem and we removed the thermostat and cleaned them up and reinstalled. They than ran fine with no over heating.
