Hi guys I have just bought a b

Hi guys I have just bought a boat with a 1980 50 horse merc. It seems to start o.k. when cold but after running for a while it is hard to start and idoling fast.I have adjusted the idol out but still idoling fast.

"Does it have rempte controls? If so, the linkage might be holding the throttle open by itself. Try it with the throttle cable off and see if it idles properly then. On the hard starting, you might need plugs or a fuel system cleaning/ adjustment.

i got a 1999 50 hp mercury out

i got a 1999 50 hp mercury outboard verry little hours i try to start it and all the motor does is whine and the starter does no ingage got any ideas on what is wrong please advise
 
You need to loosen the bendix

You need to loosen the bendix on the starter and give it some light lubricant.

"thanks fastjeff 50 merk is now running better after adjusting mixture on carbies. now having trouble with starter motor. It is not engaging, just screams when trying to start. with the cowling off i can see the cog on the top of the starter is not lifting up enough to engage with the fly wheel."

I just sprayed the starter motor with penall spray and is starting the motor again. Saved approx.$200 for a new starter."
