"Gary you should change the water pump impeller religiously every year or two, they are rubber and when left sitting without use they get dry and brittle, so when you crank it up they just practicaly disintergrate. to change the impeller you have to drop the lower unit off. i have another post somewhere that i gave the exact instructions to another so i will post back with it if i can find it."

"This is a fairly easy job, just make a thourough note of how it comes apartto ensure it goes back together properly.

To Drop the bottom leg undo the two exposed nuts one on either side of the lower unit. Note you wont get those nuts all the way off until the other nuts are removed and the leg drops a bit. Through the top of the plastic lug at the back of the lower unit there is a bolt that holds the trim tab anode, remove that lug then undo the nut and remove the anode. up in the cavity from where the anode was, there should be another nut underneath a bit further forwards remove that also. also you will see one nut on the underside forwards of the trim tab. once the 5 nuts are off the lower unit should should drop down the drive shaft included, with a bit of a wiggle. sometimes if they havent been off for a long while they need some gentle persuasion (avoid using hammers etc.). the water pump is easily visible encased over the drive shaft. three nuts to undo enabling removal of the cover exposing the impeller. Pay attention to how the gaskets and plates are set so they are replaced correctly. check quality of gaskets etc. remember when removing impeller from shaft there is a key way and the key will probably fall off when you slide up the impeller. remember to clean all parts and thouroughly flush the pick up from the pump assembly down to the bottom intake in the leg. remove the plastic mesh cover at the first inlet at the bottom of the leg near the skeg and clean out, as gunk and broken bits of impeller can fall down into it and affect efficiency of water inlet. P.s make sure the new impeller is locked into the key on the drive shaft before you slide the housing over it. turn the driveshaft the same way the engine runs as you slide the housing over the impeller."

"Also remember to make sure engine is in neutral when you remove lower unit, and ensure the gear selector on the lower unit remians in neutral for re-installation. you will know this by being able to freely spin the prop either way whislt holding onto the driveshaft."

"Richard, you should have started a "new discussion" - your thread gets lost in someone elses and no-one see's it that wasn't involved in the original post.

You can try reposting. If you put up your serial number as well it will help.

Go back to the main Mercury page - hit start new discussion near the very top of the topics and fire away..."
