" I own a 50 hp Mercury 500 4 cyl. ouboard, I believe it is a 1974 Model. I recently relocated, and my boat has been in storage for the last 2 years. It ran perfectly when stored.
I recently retrieved it, and now I cannot get the motor to run smoothly. It will start when choked, but it will not continue running unless I constantly hit the electronic choke button on. Could this be a problem with the carb? I am afraid that gas sitting in the carb evaporated over time and clogged somethig. Any advice would be appreciated. "

" I removed the bowl from the top carburetor and checked it, and while there was a little gunk in it, it wasn't covered in varnish, and was cleaner than I thought it would be. I sprayed down both carbs with carb cleaner, and it seemed to run a little better. I did notice that it wasn't drawing gas through the hose very well, and when I pump the bulb, some gas is leaking around the bulb/hose joint. How important is it that the hose to the outboard moter is air tight? Maqybe I should change the hose first? "

You must remove jets to clean

You must remove jets to clean them.Carburetor cleaner in a can is (in my opinion) a waste of money and time.
