50 HP Mercury Charging System

I have a 2008 4 stroke 50 HP Mercury Outboard and want to add a battery isolator to the charging system so that the engine will charge the trolling motor battery in addition to the cranking battery. Will the alternator and charging system handle the additional battery capacity?

agree on no hurry..in fact i would not do it....how much charging you gonna get between fishing spots?charging system on that size boat is designed to maintain a charge...not charge a down battery....too much current places stress on charging system ....current equals heat...stators do not like heat.....

have both batteries fully charged when putting boat in the water...if you are fishing enough to run trolling motor down then carry another battery...

just my opinion....and practice

keep it simple and always have a hot ignition battery ...

With your outboard, you're better off with a battery switch. The problem with most isolators is that they will allow both batteries to charge at the same time. This puts a lot of stress (and heat) on the voltage regulator. Merc regulators are famous for failure, especially when trying to charge multiple batteries (or run a lot of accessories). With a 4 position switch (off, 1, 2, both), you can switch the charging current from one battery to the other as required, and ease the load on the regulator.
