Hi, Parents old boat and 1997 50hp Johnson had not run 10-12 years. After inspection I found it had no spark and the warning buzzer at the remote has been over heated at one time. I went through all the connections visually inspected and cleaned. I took off the flywheel to inspect and clean. With and without the remote hooked up I tested the Charge coil, sensor coil, and power pack, and coil everything seemed ok. some how when I checked for spark again, I had spark. Hooked up the remote and it started. I thought I had it whipped, but yesterday it would not start (this has happened twice before since the motor has been working), so decided to do the tests previously mentioned except for taking the flywheel off, all tests showed good, but no voltage from power pack from either cylinder. I retested today and had voltage, I hooked up the remote and today it starts. The only thing that changed today from yesterday besides the date was the it was rainy and humid yesterday, and today is cool and low humidity. Before I buy a power pack does anyone have any words of wisdom?

Thank you for taking the time read my post

So the motor starts or sparks ok with the remote controls disconnected?

Have you tested the key switch for intermittent voltage? When the motor doesn't spark, did you try disconnecting the yellow/black kill wire to see if the spark comes back? Have you checked to see if the yellow/red wire is sending 12v to the pack when you are turning the key (when the motor is not starting)? These two wires could trick you into thinking it is a bad pack. If either of these tests fail, I would take the key switch out and test it with the factor procedure, wiggling the key around while you test it.

Also, if these tests pass, try warming the motor up at an idle for 15-20 mins, then turn it off and see if it will restart. If it is a pack going out, heat makes em worse.
