50 hp Johnson or 35 Mercury??

Not sure which category to post this under where it will actually get read, so trying here.
I am wanting to re-power a new to me 14ft, early 1980's fiberglass runabout. It came with a very heavy, 1981 Johnson, which is too much motor for me and in my opinion, the boat. There are two used motors for sale that I am considering, and while I am not that mechanical minded, I do know that there is more to comparing motors than just the HP, ie: weight, displacement etc. While I don't need to go 40mph, I don't want t be a snail. Can anyone, tell me, on my boat, how much difference there might in speed between a 1992, 35hp Force (so Mercury?) and a 1982, 50 hp Johnson, both are 20" shaft, with electric start. I am not too brand specific, although I lean towards OMC, but all makes have their good and bad, the 50hp is $300 more, both are an hour away, but different directions. Any advice is appreciated, Thanks

I am not a fan of Force motors even those made by mercury. The Johnson is a little old too, but ok. I would wait for something better if it were up to me.

Something better or newer, would also mean more $$$$, and for a boat that will only be used on occasional weekends from maybe May thru September, I would have trouble justifying paying more? I think the condition of a motor, is more important than age. Most boat owners I know have pre 1990 motors, that run fine.

Just giving my opinion. I wouldn't own a Force because no matter the age, they have to be maintained. Buying it from someone else means who knows what has been done. I would choose the cheaper older motor of the two if $$ is your main motive.
