Does the 1995 50 hp and the 1995 48 SPL use the same lower unit? If not, do the splines and shift linkage hook up?

In my opinion the 40 / 48 / 50 / 55 / 60 HP 2 cylinder units from about 1978 to 2005 were all weak !----Hence this fact.----For the commercial models they used the much stronger 3 cylinder lower unit on these motors. -

I guess I've never seen a commercial model. I have only heard complaints on the models beginning in 92 or 93. I don't recall when they quit using this unit.

The 89 to 2005 are all the exactly the same !!-----The only difference is a smaller spline on top of the driveshaft on the 89 to 92 models.-----Seems you doubt the information presented here??

I wish I could find how-to adapt a heavier lower unit, but that's not happening. The 48 & 50 were good motors. Just a shame they had weak lower units.

Unfortunately, I know. Manufacturers, whether outboard, cars, tractors, whatever, cannot stand it when something works.

I doubt it.-----Got some " warranty / insurance " gearcases off a dealer.---Only $25 each and hardly a scratch on the paint.-----Twisted splines and crunched up gears are the norm these days.

When you rebuild these lowers, do you have to set the lash in the gears by swimming, or do they just go together?

Yes , the pinion gear MUST shimmed for proper tooth contact / backlash.----Best have a shop with correct fixture ( i have it ) do this for you.

Thanks. When one gives, I'll get with you. I don't have a spare lower to rebuild right now.
