5 HP Tohatsu Choke Issues

I have a 5HP Tohatsu and recently, it has not been running well. It starts right up, but once you push the choke in, it dies. While in gear, if I pull the choke in or out, it gives me more throttle. With the engine cover off, and engine running, I placed my thumb over the air intake vent and the engine runs great. As soon as I take my thumb off, it runs rough.

Any ideas or suggestions?

What is your model? Sounds like a too-lean condition, probably caused by varnishing in the carb. If so, a dip cleaning of the carb is called for.
