5.7gsi over choking when cold

My 1998 5.7 Gsi's run great when warm but when when started cold the smoke black and grey for about 3-5 min the clear up. After that they run great. Had both tuned up before the season but still smoke. Any suggestions?

From what I'm seeing, the GSI was available in both TBI and carburetor.

We'll need the Alpha charactors that follow 5.7GSI..... such as: 5.7GSICPLKD, 5.7GSIPLKDCE, 5.7GSIPLKE, 5.7GSIPLKDCE, 5.7GSIPLKE

they are TBI. not sure about the Alpha characters. I will try to find out. They are mated to the duoprop drives if that is any help.

Hi Rick, i found the serial numbers from the survey, 4110154201 and 4110154202. don't know if this helps. When i go down to the boat next i will look at those alphas.

OK... with TBI, there is no conventional choke. Cold start enrichment is done eletronically.


They are mated to the duoprop drives if that is any help.
It doesn't help with your question per 'se......., but it sure puts a smile on my face!

Is it common for these engines to do this? Maybe leave the m alone as they run fine after a few minutes.

I have a 98 BY model GSi and it does the same thing,I tried replacing the sensors etc. no help so I just deal with it.

That's what I was thinking. How long have you owned your vessel and has it ever affected your engine oil or anything else? I have a Trojan 320 express by Carver. These engines and DP drives move the boat along nicely and are very good on fuel using 20 gallons an hour or less. So with that being said I would be interested in anyone else's comments on theses engines and drives.
