5.7 merc carb fuel issue

Hey first post looking for some advice. I have a 1992 Rinker with a 5.7 merc with a Rochester 4 barrel carb. Last season took it out and there was a sudden smell of gas fumes followed by the engine not staying running afterwards. I figured the diaphragm in the fuel pump gave out.

Just replaced the fuel pump and it did look as though the diaphragm had failed, however the engine is still acting the same way. I can get it to start by pumping the throttle to prime it but it won't stay running unless I continue to pump the throttle. I can see fuel flowing out the two visible jets in the carb, I'm assuming there's two more i can't see? Also, the choke is fixed in the open position, the previous owner had done that because the choke quite or something and he said it worked like that and it did for a good period of time until I had that fuel issue that day.

the engine will start on her priming and stay running if I keep Pumping the throttle but if I leave it in one spot or the neutral position it dies

thanks in advance!!

On hot days or in certain areas of the country you can get away without a choke, but as a general rule....no. Fix choke.
Did you put stabilizer in the fuel when you stopped using it for the season last year? Ethanol can leave some pretty nasty deposits in a carb that don't clean up with the usual "treatments".

hopefully, you changed the oil before putting the boat away for the season last yeark and stabilized the fuel in the tan????

what you describe is likely the carb being dirty and the idle circuits not working....the "pump the throttle" action uses the accelerator pump to keep adding fuel to the intake....and is likely to be the source of the liquid fuel you see flowing in the carb - hopefully only when the throttle is pumped. BTW, the 'jets' in a Q-Jet are not visible with the carb fully assembled and installed.....
