5.7 Coupler Failure

My new to me 2008 Crownline 255 CCR 5.7 MPI Mah Bravo 3 coupler failed.

But the boat only has 36 fresh water hours / & is covered under the extended 5 year Merc Warranty.

Question is - is there any particular reason for the low hour coupler to fail ? I think there's no lube point/zerk on the coupler - so not maintenance is called for (?)

Thanks

Hi
Thanks for the response
The Merc Authorized tech said the coupler was fine and the Gimbal is the problem (as well as the Steering U-joints too), hard for me to believe the gimbal prob caused a smokey engine compartment, and the other symptom was when accelerating there was a huge drag feeling (like in a car letting the clutch out with the emergency brake on) and the boat wouldn't get up to speed, and the smoke smelled more like a clutch burn than rubber. We drove it back at idle speed. Whatever, the boat is being repaired prior to me buying it ...

I heard the outdrive is original never removed for 5 seasons without service (because of the low hours) and there was some corrision inside - even though it a 2008 36 hour / fresh water boat...

does any of this sound right ? any other comments are appreciated / anything I should be worried about / I plan on using the boat in the ocean (and not idling all the time) and have it serviced each year

by the way the warranty is expired by about 1 month and the seller is paying the $1800 repair

Thanks

In addition to what's been mentioned, lack of an annual engine drive coupler alignment check/test comes to mind for me.

BTW, this is the Volvo Penta section of the forum.
