4hp seahorse running problem

Hi Folks,

I post up on other forums on marineengine but i haven`t done so here so greetings from Scotland.

Ok, down to the problem. A pal of mine came around today with his 4hp seahorse and has left it with me to have a look at as he`s not very mechanically minded. The engine starts and runs ok, supposedly pumping plenty of water but apparently gets very hot after about 5 mins and then shuts down???

Now this problem has me puzzled as if it was the thermostat at fault then surely it wouldn't pump plenty of water and as it`s supposed to be pumping water then i`d recon the impeller should be ok as well. I've not yet started work on the engine to see what the spark plug colour is like or to see the engine running but i thought i`d post up to see if anyone else has had a similar problem and some ideas of where to start?

Cheers, Matt.

Ok so do you have a model # as not all 4 HP seahorse motors are the same.---------I do not believe it has a thermostat !--------What part of the motor " gets very hot " as the block exhaust cover may not be water cooled.

Cheers for the reply racerone and as i`m now mostly working on honda 4 strokes then i`m a bit rusty in regards to 2 strokes.

The model number is BJ4BRENM made in Belgium and as i`ve not had it running then i`m not sure exactly where it`s hot. Saying that then if it`s stopping after 5 mins with it`s hood off then something isn`t right somewhere.

Cheers, Matt.

Thanks for the input kimcrwbr1. The guy who owns the engine was given it by his boss so no idea of it`s history but i`m sure i`ll get it sorted out.

Cheers, Matt.

Ok, a wee update. I finally got around to working on the outboard so stuck the carb in an ultrasonic cleaner to make sure that was ok. Next job was to get it fired up and see what was happening. On tickover then the engine is fine but as soon as it`s put under any load then the water from the pee hole gets scalding hot. The cylinder head seems to be the hottest point so the head was stripped off and channels cleaned and inspected but nothing drastic there. new gasket fitted and re-tested but the problem is just the same.

I`m puzzled now as the cylinder bore is ok so water must be flowing around to cool both sides. Anyone have any thoughts?

Cheers, Matt.

Cheers and i`ll let the owner know as he`s now got the outboard back as i simply don`t have time to do it for him. Hopefully he`ll get to the bottom of the problem as it`s a tidy wee thing for it`s age.
