Dear boaters,
Earlier this year picked up this '99 (mostly renovated) Merc 4hp 2-stroke outboard for my sib. Took it out for 2 short trips and it died on me the 2nd time (stalled idling and cruising few times before tho, like it got worse progressively). After about 30 mins it started to struggle badly while wanting to go WOT again: power went up and down until it died 1 minute after... on the middle of a lake, of course
Ever since that, it's totally dead - other than a spurt of air every 15/20 pulls, it's does absolutely nothing. My common sense tells me there is no combustion at all, never, strangely enough.
- it did pee before dying
- fresh fuel (1:100 mixture)
- oct 98 e5 fuel (it's either 95 e10 or 98 (or higher) e5 here)
- yes, cap vent and fuel are open
- carb is getting fuel
- carb has been cleaned prior to this
- checked carb, paths and jets seem to be clear
- fuel 'pump' seems fine, carb gets fuel so yes
- it has spark
- tried another coil from a 5hp
- piston head is moving
- manual start is pretty light tho, not much resistance
- in gear or neutral the prop moves
I'm baffled. Not that the engine is a goldmine or in use now, but just want to get it running for the sake of it. Am I missing something (less) obvious? Any input would be really appreciated
