4hp 1969 spark

I have bought a 4hp 1969 Johnson and it has good sparks on both cylinders. However when the spark plugs are put into the engine the sparks stop. I have tried adjusting the two lean/rich knobs with no success. Is the fuel extinguishing the spark? Please reply if you have any idea of what I can do.
Cheers Arty

Do this test.--------Does spark jump a gap of 1/4" or more , yes or no ?----If the motor has the original coils it needs a set of new ones.

The rich/lean knobs have nothing whatsoever to do with the spark. Please clarify---how do you know the sparks stop with the plugs in? Or do you mean plugs in but wires not connected?

Put a teaspoon of fuel mix directly in the spark plug holes and quickly put the plugs in and give it a yank. If it fires your not getting fuel to the plugs. All it takes is a couple drops of water in the carb to make you scratch your head. Are you getting good compression?

Thanks for all the replies. I took the coils off my 4 hp Evinrude and put them on the Johnson which made it run so the issue was the coils. Thanks again Arty
