"My 48 spl has the manual tilt

"My 48 spl has the manual tilt lever. Looks to be a small cylinder that has a valve for controlled bleed off to damper the tilt. Is this unit serviceable? I finally got it up once, but had to stand on the lower unit to get it to go back down."
 
Check to make sure the cable g

Check to make sure the cable going to tilt lever is operating correctly. Unscrew the large plastic nut on bottom of cylinder and make sure the slider switch is in the right position to allow operation of the cylinder. Cable stretches out and slide switch doesn't open/close.

"I found the tilt assist cable shell is broken. I suspect the cable is bound up for some reason. My cable has a knurled nut where it attaches to the cylinder. I suppose this screws into the cylinder? BTW guys, thanks for your help. Perhaps I'm wrong, but shouldn't the motor be where it will tilt up if you hit something submerged? That is the reason I am trying to fix this. I have the CMC tilt and trim unit also."
