48 Special no prop power

My son-in-law was running across the lake and heard some noise come off the outboard, and lost prop power. After looking it over we ran back to the lake and launched it. Trimmed it up and put it in gear. The prop turns real slow no matter how much gas you give it. I fear the lower end is toast but I figured I would ask around to see if there is anything else I should check. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated. (just going to throw this out there, I know VERY little about outboards)

Drain the gear oil and see what you have there.

Drop it in gear, grab ahold of the prop and see if the flywheel turns when you rotate the prop.

Gave it a shot.... it caught for a second and the flywheel started to spin, then broke loose and the prop spun freely. Guessing the low end is shot.

????------What does lower unit gear oil look like ?

Still working on the oil. It did sound rough when I spun the prop, sounded like two gears not meshing.

Sounds like the teeth are stripped off the gears.--------Going to be a big $$$$ fix I believe.
