having issues with performance

having issues with performance engine idles rough sounds like cylinder coming in and out. also carbs.wont adjust idle mixture. small solinoid on right side of motor has fuel lines on it could this be the problem? motor sat 8 months but fires first try also idle not steady and very high. has new plugs. loeses power when reved up.

"Hi Mark, I had a 1987 Johnson 48spl which would start readily and run fine. It wouldn't idle without intermittent choke. It sounded like a cylinder was dropping out. Ran fine at WOT. If this sounds similar, here is what I found.
After numerous cleanings of the carburetors trying to fix things, I read this site and followed the basics. I ran a compression test which showed low compression in both cylinders. It seems that the enriched mixture was needed to keep the engine running at idle. Upon removing the head, I saw that the cylinders were scored and the powerhead needed a rebuild. I got this motor for free and used it about 6 months with the bad idle condition, but it was easier for me to just replace the motor with a like year/size. I have lots of spares now.
