479 fuel pump & proper gasket

Hello,
I have 1985 twin SRV255. Had the starboard engine rebuilt over the winter, runs great; made the mistake of reusing the old fuel pump. It went bad of course and had the service marina replace it 2 months ago. Of course it doesn't match the old one, diffeerent intake fuel port postion on pump body and the arm doesn't have the old wear pad but arm is formed to have the cam contact angle the same. Gasket appears to be proper "thick" one. Since I was down I had them install it and try it and it worked.

But now for past 3 weeks starboard has had increasingly poor idle performance and now dies at idle, especially cold. So increased idle screw on carb week ago and ran ok again. This weekend back to poor idle performance. When coming back to idle from above 1,000 rpm carb gradually floods and engine dies, gas continues to run into carb throat after engine stalls, slowy stoping "overflow" after about 15 seconds. Runs great above 1,000 rpm all the way to WOT @ 4,200 rpm.
1) What is proper thickness of the "thick" fuel pump gasket, installed one is about 3/16"?
2) Does it sound like fuel pressure is too high and is over powering float causing the flooding? Don't have a good way to measure fuel pressure and boat is 3 hr. drive away
3) Any one know where can I get proper "thick" gasket or if can I add a temp thin gasket to the current gasket until I get the right one to drop fuel pressure

Appreicate everyones advice, and thanks in advance, Mark

Mark Searay, if you are referring to a 470 engine with the Carter style mechanical fuel pump then yes you definitely have to have the spacer in place. Yes, the pump will create more than (4-6 pounds) and will cause symptoms as you stated. I do not know the thickness but you should be able to find one from this site or ebasicpower.com or ebay on a used fuel pump. That is if you can find someone selling a complete Carter style pump with spacer. If you find that the part is NLA then go to a Mercruiser parts dealer and tell the guy to look under antiquated engine systems. That is how I was able to get a few NLA parts for my engine. I have a 1988 3.7lx 180 horse or simply 470. Last resort is to ask a guy called stractor on "Breezework 470 talk discussion forum". Make sure you google the entire search word. Somebody on that site should be able to help you out. best of luck, Tom
