I recently purchased a 1979 Se

I recently purchased a 1979 Sea Star with a 470 mercruiser. The problem is this...we tried starting for a few days and finally had it running no issues. Then out of nowhere it started making a grinding noise when we tried starting it. After pulling the starter out I found the teeth on starter gear chewed up. This was supposedly just replaced. My question is this...what causes this and is there any adjustment to the starter?

""Typically" dont need

""Typically" dont need to do anything, need to make sure it's tight with "starter" bolts and have the hanger bolted at the forward end of the starter, while its out you may want to try and take a picture of the flywheel with a flash camera to get a good look at the teeth.

IF the spacing from the starter teeth to the flywheel teeth are too tight they should whine or grind sound a bit.. you can get starter shims, trying with the thinnest first.

But I haven't seen them yet on a boat engine."

It's possible the starter was replaced prior to purchase for the same reason, chewed teeth. When gears get chewed up both get damaged not just one. Your flywheel ring gear is probably toast too.
