does anybody like the 470 any good points .i have been told to run from this eng, but they run so good
,from just hearing them run for a few min , and starting after setting a year .i havent checked if stator is putting out correct voltage ,but if it is ,is it neccesary to change out .and is it a big deal...surely some body has one ,that likes them. i see on ebay one for 3grand and 5grand ,not that i would pay that so parts must be still here. are they gas hogs on the two bbl ,and would they have trouble pushing the 28' down river. thanks

i have been told to run from this eng,

Ayuh,... So ya didn't like the advice, yet yer askin' again,..??

If ya keep fishin',...

I'm sure somebody will tell ya what you Want to hear...

But it ain't gonna be Me....

The 470 is the redheaded bastard step-child Mercruiser has abandoned, 'n wishes Everybody would forget....

Good points:
Strong little engines when in near perfect condition.

Weak points:
Stator charge system failures.
Voltage regulator failures.
Camshaft drives the Engine Circulating pump.
The above share a common seal area that is problematic.
Vibrations that other similar engines do not share.
Drive ratio is apparently uniquie to this engine.
Starter motor is unique to this engine.

This is an engine that is not desireable today.

.

BTW, the 470 is Mercruiser's own aluminum block design that used the cast iron 460 Ford cylinder head.
I believe that the bore/stroke may be close to the Ford 460 bore/stroke.
470 = 3.7L X's 2 = 7.4L
470 = 225 cu in X's 2 = 450 cu in.

So apparently it's just shy of the Ford 460 bore/stoke.

Here's the camshaft - circ pump impeller drive arrangement.

This engine lived a rather short run. That in itself should make a statement.
