460 to 454 swap

Low Tide

I may be acquiring a boat with a Ford 460 engine and an OMC outdrive. looke like a Cobra. What would need to be changed to mate a Chevy 454 to the outdrive?? or would the outdrive have to changed as well??? your help is appreciated...

When I looked into this, the answer I got was it could be done, but it will cost some. I believe the 460 was mated to the King Cobra which is a very stout OD. I don't remember specifics, but it turned out to be a far bigger headache than I was willing to take on.

Good Luck

Hey thanks for replying....I mean I know that the ford block and the chevy block have different bolt patterns on the back. is there something that neede to be changed in order to bolt up a chevy motor to the outdrive?

never did that swap in front of a cobra I/O but have done a couple inboards....the flywheel cover will change and you'll need a coupler to match the flywheel as well as the drive's input shaft.....and likely have to adjust the front mounts' locations....then the exhaust will likely need to be modified - the extent driven by the new and old manifolds...Finally, probably have a few minor changes on the engine's wiring harness, too..

Yes, the flywheel cover (aka bellhousing the automotive world) and the drive coupler.

But it does not stop there. You will now need to figure out what to do with the exhaust.

Personally, I would walk away from this boat with an out-dated and out-of-production OMC stern drive, and look at boats that are set up with Volvo Penta.
