"Here is my dilemma, On my starboard engine I am getting alot of steam and I noticed the water flow out of the exhaust does not flow as much as the port...I changed manifolds and risers checked the u cooler and the heat exchanger for obstructions now what ??? I am thinking of getting an infrared temp. gun just too check the system ...Does anyone no what the acceptable temps are throughout the system...I also read in other forums that a simple air leak in the raw water pump can cause my problem...any help would be appreciated......"

"check the thru-hull (clean), seacock (open), & strainer (clean and tid lid w/ good gasket).

when was the last time the raw water pump was serviced?

Recent manifold work? if so, did the correct gaskets get installed?

the IR gun is a great tool for this type of troubleshooting. The range of temps have been posted in other threads on this board - just use the search function. what you get where will be driven by having a heat exchanger or raw water cooling (you didn't say which you had)."

"Good man, makomark! The more

"Good man, makomark! The more infared thermometers being used out there, the less burnt up engines we'll see.

Also look for an air leak in the system going to the raw water pump. THe tiniest air leak here can cause all kinds of trouble.

Ask me how I know this!

Vacuum leak in raw water pump

Vacuum leak in raw water pump can cause this as well as warn wear plate. Warn out pump housing and or wear plate will result in cavitation.
This may sound dumb but what about belt tension.

Also rule out vacuum leaks on intake manifold and carburator base plate. This will not affect water flow but can cause steam with too lean of a fuel air mix. Also spark plugs can tell the story.

I also may have missed this but did you say you replaced risers and elbows? if you did not replace the this could still be an issue.

first of all thanks for all th

first of all thanks for all the advice I just found this forum and it has already proved to be an invaluable resource....Just to update everyone my problem turned out to be my oil cooler...I bypassed it just for the purpose of troubleshooting and the problem was solved ...I ordered the knew one and will be installing it on monday..

"I think that "cooler"

"I think that "cooler" has caused more overheating than many other defects. They tend to erode the zinc anode and deposit it on the internal tubes, blocking them."

"I would have to agree Dave, When I had opened mine up the inside core honeycomb looked like a bees hive with the sealed ends.

Could they not re-design this with larger passages and let this have greater capacity?"

CoolCraft did a redesign with

CoolCraft did a redesign with larger end caps. I suppose that could reduce the water velocity and reduce the erosion.

"Dave: Do you have any info on the coolcraft part?

Al: It not the cooler capacity, its the zinc pencils like Dave said. I pondered relocating my pencil to the outlet port (vs the 'crossover tube' but decided against it. the though was the zinc stuff winds up in the HX which is a bigger PITA to clean out and even worse if replacement is needed.

The other thought was to remove the pencil altogether. Rationale, the mercrusier HX have NO zinc pencils and they last just as long as the OEM design. Decided against this, too, as there's one small difference between the two regarding installation - The merc install isolated the HX from the block, electrically.

I've decided the best route is the undocumented maintenance action of back-flushing the oil coolers. If you do it regularly, you can get many years of service from those coolers without having to unsolder them (or use the acid bath)."
