454 crusader starting problem

I have problem starting without using starting fluid. have replaced electric fuel pump, oil pressure sensing switch and rebuilt the carb. mechanic has suggested rewiring the harness to essentially provided direct power to fuel pump upon turning on ignition key.

I'm sure someone here with more experience dealing with electric fuel pumps will chime in. I have mechanical pumps on my Crusader's. One word of caution that I will suggest is stop using starting fluid. They can do more damage than good when trying to fire an engine. I know my dad used starting fluid in the winter to fire up his 6-71 Detroit's back in the day, but that was the norm back then.

What year are your Crusaders? Better yet what generation are the engines? Are they older with tin valve covers hence originally equiped with a mechanical fuel pump, or are they gen6 engines with a factory installed electric pump?

Don't let your "mechanic" rewire as he suggested...and find another one. Ask your insurance agent why if you have any doubts.

If they don't want to start after sitting a full week but they start ok after sitting a short while (or even overnight) you likely don't have any "problem"...the fuel is evaporating out of the float bowls. Search this board and you will find several threads on adding a "primer button"...

makomark. What you suggests sounds exactly like the fix I have been looking for.The engine does just what you describe.I was not able to easily identify a thread for a " primer button " Is there any way you could give me a link or a description of what it entails so I could ask a mechanic to install one.
Thanks a bunch for that input.

Sorry, instead of a primer button, you should add a connection to the positive of the pump to the Ignition terminal of the starter solenoid. It will power the pump during cranking only.

No extra wires to the helm or holes to drill.
