"I'm looking at purchasing a boat with a 45 hp mariner. Starts right up. Kind of smokey but is a mix gas/oil. Hasn't been started in a year. Ran it for a minute and no water out of the sight port. checked the intake and took the screen off. found little black rubber pieced. the owner said when they started it a year ago, a buzz sound came from the throttle area (alarm maybe) and they shut it down. does this sound like a can of worms or what. any idea of what's up"

"Impeller is definately shot which may have let to some damage when they last fired it up, but no way to really know without giving it a good going over.

The 45 Mariners were all Merc built between 85 and 89. These motors didn't have warning systems on them, were fitted with an Auto-Blend oil injection system which killed many a motor, but some models did have what was called an "electric handle" which incorporated power trim etc - this may have been what the "buzzing" sound was.

Since you don't really know the state of the motor I wouldn't place much value in it when considering the whole package. If the boat is decent, buy it planning on replacing the motor (and factoring that into the price), then if you can get it going without much work/cost you got a good deal..."

"So I got the boat as per your suggestion and have been running it after replacing water pump base and impeller. Now water flows out the telltale and I have been running Salt Away to clean out the water line. The engine seems to be running and not overheating but I saw a 45 running on youtube and noticed water running through the two upper ports. I haven't noticed that on my motor. Should I be concerned? How do I resolve this or is it necessary?
So now I noticed that there is excess oil dripping from the upper and prop exhaust ports. Is this rings related or seals or mix? i'm using 50 to 1 blend. Is it time to take it to a pro? Thanks, Reed"

"Robert, as long as you have a strong flow out the tell-tale, no concern about it not exiting the exhaust ports as well - on the video you saw that motor may well have a rotted exhaust tube


The oil you notice is "normal" - two strokes collect alot of burnt/unburnt oil and gas residue in the exhaust housing while they are running.

If you leave the boat in the water for an hour or so after a good run you rarely see it, but once you pull it up on shore that "goop" starts sliding it's way down the exhaust, exiting through the hub on the prop and sometimes out the drain holes near the cavitation plate - not to worry...."
