"Ever seen this? I have 440 freshwater cooled (including exhaust manifold) that are producing a good bit of steam from the exhast at cruise speed. The surveyor showed that one of the manifolds was over 200 deg but the engine temps were good. One of the motors is also loosing some coolant but none in the oil and no hydrocarbons in the coolant(used Snap On Tool to test) so not head gasket.
I know I need to go through and replace manifolds, elbows, risers and service heat exchangers as they are old but has anyone seen the symptom of steam from the exhaust?"

Yep the risers are plugged. Pu

Yep the risers are plugged. Pull the manifolds and check them also but most problems are caused by the small water outlet passages in the risers restricting the water flow.

"Right on, Dan. You shouldn't see more than 170 ' F or so anywhere in the exhaust system.

"Can the restriction in the elbows/risers cause the high temps in the exhaust manifold?
I was going to buy all the raw water side parts-elbows, extensions, risers before buying the freshwater manifolds. I think there are some plates or gaskets that seperate the raw from the fresh at the manifold also. Should I just bite the bullet and buy the manifolds too or can that $800 wait until after the elbows and risers?"

"You are doing it the right way. Take the manifolds off and have your local radiator shop boil them out for you, the passages are large and you will be able to see if they look clean. Yes there is a gasket at each end of the manifold and they are the same.

Thanks Dan. I still can't

Thanks Dan. I still can't wrap my mind around how one of the manifolds can be 230 deg unless its clogged also.

"IF one side is plugged, the other side gets all the water and will run cold. That's why (here I go again!) I insist that no boater should be without an infared non-contact temp gun! Shoot the entire system from the water pump to the exahust and you'll see where the problem is--it just jumps out at you.

Jeff

PS: If you want to test those old parts for water tightness, make up block off plates and pressurize the parts with water. ANY leaks means new parts."
