"I ran the 440 for 10 minutes, with 60 lb pressure on the gauge.changed the oil and filter checked the dipstick to be certain it was full and started her up. No oil pressure, zero.Removed the filter no oil. spun the motor with out starting it and still no pressure and no oil coming out with the filter off.I used a quart of engine flush when i first started the motor before the oil change. could the oil cooler have become clogged?any ideas would be helpful"

"I am intimately familiar with this problem and here was a recent post regarding this problem from May 11, 2009. Lots of good ideas.

Also, if you can run the engine a little, with someone at the igniton key, crack open the oil filter (just unscrew a little off post and pre fill it), start engine and person at the filter will hear the air escape, then tighten the filter. Person at ignition key will either see pressure reprime itself at the gauge or turn the key off. You will be able to reprime it.

Keep us posted!"

"That's one of those motors (like the old Buick V-6) that have their oil pump external, with a long pipe coming from the oil pan. Easy to suck air in and not pump oil. We used to pack the oil pump with grease to improve the seal when firing up a new motor.

It sounds ghastly, but if you blipped the throttle a few times it would have primed itself.

"I finally got to work on the motor.I filled the oil filter spun the motor, then did it again. It worked, thanks alot!Next question, the previous mechanic had 20w50 in both motors the book says 30w another mechanic said texaco xtraHD 40.whats proper for a south jersey motor?"

"I'd use 10W30. No sense using high viscosity oil when you don't need it--that just wears out the oil pump gears.

Frankly, you'd have had less pressure problems if you had used 10W30--it flows into the oil pump easier.
