"I have a 4.3LX with Alpha 1 which stalls when put into ahead gear. I first thought it was just when engine cold but occasionally it happens after running around for at speed some time. It only happens in Ahead and NEVER Astern! The only way around it is to physicaly hold the throttle on the carb, while an assistant put vessel into gear! Idle is at around 900rpm. Anyone with any ideas where to look."

Shifting in/out of gear should

Shifting in/out of gear should be done quickly and smooth. Hesitation will cause it to stall. Set the idle speed on a hot engine in forward gear at 650 RPMs.

Examine the throttle and shift cables at the carb to see if they are loose. Look at the shift interrupt switch to see if the roller on the switch is sitting in the groove of the cam.

Check to see that the choke is functioning properly; opening all the way.

"To add to what Guy has said,

"To add to what Guy has said, watch closely the shift interrupt mechanism while someone else shifts it into forward gear.

If you notice the actuator arm move and the roller come out of the V notch, that means you have excessive friction in the lower shift cable.
If its more than a few years old, it likely needs the lower shift cable replaced. They get old and stiff and start to bind.

The shift interrupt switch is only supposed to activate when shifting OUT of gear. When it activates it kills your ignition, but only for an instant if its working properly.

hello yes this is an eletronic

hello yes this is an eletronic switch that cuts out the engine if it think you are going into gear 2 quickly

"sounds like a lower shift cab

"sounds like a lower shift cable. You can try looking for barnacles, sand and other debris around the exposed parts of the shift linkage on the drive. Or, remove the drive and activate the shift link by hand and see how it feels."
