"Hi I have a 1991 mercruiser 4.3lx. It pours water from what looks like a sacricial plug on the port side of the engine block. It gets hot when on muffs but has water coming from the exit at the outdrive, though I would say it looks weak. Any ideas on what to do with leak? Thanks Owen"

"Hi, I can only see it using a mirror and a torch. It squirts out of a hole around 1 mm across, though it has a sort of flange on the block. As you say it may be a freeze plug, but I can't find any mention of them in my clymer manual. How can they be replaced, if at all."

"Support the engine, remove the engine mount (3 bolts on block, 2 where it bolts to bilge) then you can either replace or tap back into place.

best to remove then re-insert, shouldn't use sealer.

"Owen. Check to make sure that there are no threads on the inside of the opening. I believe that the 4.3's have a drain plug (blue in color), on both the starboard and port side. They are used to winterize (drain water from the block) the motor if you do not have freshwater cooling. Yours may have blown out or snapped off."

"Thanks Guys. I have one other problem you may be able to shed light on. I have eratic idling at times. Sometimes it will idle at around 1000rpm, others it will roaring away at 1500-2000rpm. Dirty, sticky jets in the carb perhaps or something else? Throttle cables are ok."

"When you say that the throttle cable is ok, have you removed the throttle linkage from the carburetor, and found that the rpm's stay at high idle? Something is holding the throttle body open. A motor cannot run at 1500 - 2000 rpm if the throttle on the carb is in the "idle position". Either you have a sticky throttle cable, or you are in need of a carb overhaul (sticking throttle body)."

"As cables age they stretch. what you need to do it put your control in neutral, go back to carb and remove the screw that holds the adjustable trunion for the throttle cable. Adjust the trunion to put some positive pressure on the throttle linkage so it returns to base idle repeatedly. This is a common issue with a lot of throttle linkages with not enough return spring pressure. Outboards have the same issue."
