"Took out our '04 four winns with a 4.3gl SX, about 10 min into trip smoke started pouring out of vents. Turned it off right away. I think engine temp was about 220. We use it in saltwater in Charleston Harbor. After the last time I used it and flushed it out I didn't close up the flushing port all the way so I think it just sucking air instead of water.
The exhaust hose and bellows were cooked. The aluminum elbows have all of the paint or whatever that coating is melted off. From what I can see on the y-pipe the right side looks pretty new and the left the coating is baked at the end. The oil looks ok. After I got all of the burnt pieces off I couldn't resist turning it over it fired right up and I shut it off imediately. My first plan is to change out the bellows and upper exhaust hoses. Was that just paint on the exhaust elbows or something different like a heat or sound deadener? Can they just be cleaned up and re-used? Do they need to be repainted/coated. Other than being cooked they appear to be fine. When buying the bellows and ehaust hoses is there any difference between oem volvo parts and those aftermarket ones that they sell at a place like ebasic power?
After I get that back together I was planning on changing the oil and hoping for the best. Any thing else that should absolutely be checked and/or replaced before I get too far along in this. I'm much more of a parts changer than a diagnostic guy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks."

"Check the compression on the engine. If all OK you probably lucked out with just the damage you already see. Paint on elbows just paint. If you caught it fast enough they may still be OK. If you don't repaint them, they will rust quite quickly around salt water."

I would check compression before all the exhaust is replaced to save labor just incase.

"I would put money on it that you've blown a head gasket at best, at worst cracked a head & melted a piston, just done a 4.3 for a friend who got his that hot , should have the engine back in the boat next week"

"Check the impeller on your raw water pump. If you ran it dry, there is a good chance it burned up."
