"Hi
I am new to boats and these types of problems. I have taken our boat out three times before this happened. However, today was different. The boat worked until we got out of the wake zone. I gave the boat gas and it worked fine. I was about 150 yards into the bay and there was a clicking sound from the engine bay. We stopped the boat and left it to idle. Everything was working fine until we throttled back up and the engine died. The engine would restart then die. Sometimes it would stay on for about 30 seconds and die again. Everytime i put in gear it would go at low rpms for about 30 second and die. We got it out of the water and tried to flush the engine because of saltwater. It did the same thing on land at idle. 30 seconds and die. I changed the battery it did not help what is my next step?"

"Suspect bad gas for starters. "a clicking sound from the engine bay" That may be some relay--fuel pump? Check for spark then do the basics; tuneup, fuel filter, etc.

It would help to know the engine year and fuel delivery system."

"Not enaugh info for much of a guess.
Carb or fuel injection?
Points or electronic ign?
Bad gas will smell bad, take a whif of boat gas and compare to fresh. Gas that will not burn properly will smell more like varnish or paint thinner.
The clicking sound could be a mechanical fuel pump going bad or knock or something else not related to stalling. If you have a electric fuel pump, I doubt it could ever make enaugh noise over the sound of a running engine for you to hear it. However, a fuel starved engine and make some weird noises.
I would think you should not replace anything until you find out what is wrong.
The easiest thing is to look down the throat of the carb and pump the throttle and see if there is any fuel being squirted into the primary bores.
Next...
REMOVE COIL WIRE to keep engine from starting!
Disconnect the fuel line to the carb or supply line from the injector system and pump fuel into a quart jar. With elect pump, just turn the ign key to run position to pump fuel, with mechanical pump, you have to crank the engine. Observe the flow into the jar. It should be a steady flow if elect fuel pump or forceful shots if mechanical fuel pump but with no sputtering or dribbling with either type of pump.
Elect fuel pump should fill the jar in about 30 seconds. Mechanical about twice as long.
Fill the jar and let it set for a few minutes. Look for water at the bottom of the jar and smell it.
Report results of fuel squirting into the carb when pumping the throttle and what you observe with fuel delivery from the supply line."

"Bill has you covered, make sure that there is no water in the water separator filter, as water in the fuel can cause the engine to make noise(backfire).

If you dont know much about engine, find a reputable mechanic, that will trouble shoot the whole engine for you."
