"I have a 2004 4.3L that has 130 hours on it and it is using about 1 quart of oil every 40 hours, is this ok, or is this to much oil use? Thanks"

Brian:

What brand and weight of oil are you using? How is your fuel consumption? Does the oil on the dipstick smell like gas?

"I am using 25-40 mercury oil, the oil on the dip stick does not smell like gas and my fuel use is great, I have burned 138 gallons over the last 40.5 hours, so about 3.5 gallons per hour for mixed use. The engine is in a 19 foot trophy WA. When I change the plugs I will look for oil fouling on them."

If the plugs are a tan to medi

If the plugs are a tan to medium brown color then the oil consumption can be due to engine break-in.

ENGINE GUYS; YOUR COMMENTS PLEASE.

That is not excessive consumpt

That is not excessive consumption...higher RPM's will increase consumption but your usage is within the normal range

"I agree with the others.
I quart in 40 hours is nothing.
That basically means you don't have to add between oil changes, and that's a good thing.
How many hours do you go between changes?

"Well when I got the boat, the oil looked new,but was on the low end of the dip stick so I threw a quart in, that quart is gone and the level is back to just at the low on the stick so I have 40 hours on it now, and plan to change it every 50 or so hours, that will be about 2 times a year for me."

Brian:

I am using Mobil 1 synthetic 15W50 oil in my 10 yr. old 4.3L. It seems to keep the engine a little cooler w/ excellent oil pressure at all RPMs. I fish w/my boat including trolling alot. The oil does not get as dirty as 25W40 did. Give it a try.

"if the oil isn't getting

"if the oil isn't getting dirty, I suspect it's not holding the dirt in suspension, it's depositing it into the filter. I would change the filter midpoint between oil changes so it doesn't go on bypass."

"oil does not get as dirty as 25W40 did"

I suspect that I could change filters mid-season. When I would check the Merc. 25W40 using a white paper towel the oil seemed dark w/a dirty look to it. The Mobil oil is more transparent. It has more of a dark honey w/a slight dirty appearence. Filters for both are Mercs.
