"Hi guys

I am a bit concerned that they did not change the drive oil, should they have changed the drive oil?
I am worried that there could be swarf present now its "bedded in"
Am I worrying for no reason ?, thanks in advance

"Dave, they may have pulled the drain plug only, and looked for any signs of metallic residue in the few ounces that came out! If they found none, or an acceptable amount, and no water.... they may have simply re-installed the plug.

Drive oil does not become contaminated with combustion by-products, so other than water intrusion or excessive metallic residue contamination, it may not require changing.

I'd certainly ask them what they did, though!

"I"m looking at a 98 28ft Regal Comomodore powered by twin 4.3GL volvo pentas with 700hrs.
The mechanical survey has revealed low compression in one cylinder in the port engine...120 instead of 150. The engine runs great, no signs of blow by and all other cylinders test at 150. The mechanic will take it out monday to test it under a load. Any thoughts/suggestions. Needless to say I'm not trying to have an engine issue right out of the gate."

"You may want to repeat the compression test and see if the results are consistent with the first test. If this is the case, you could then try a leak-down test on the lowest compression cylinder to attempt to pinpoint where the loss of compression is taking place. If the problem is on the head side (a leaky valve or a head gasket), that should be an relatively easy fix. But if the loss of compression is between the cylinder wall and the piston rings, that's another story.
