430a vs 430b drive

I have a 1993vp 4.3l GM 430b with a sp-c outdrive. my primary shaft bearing went while on the water and tore up the damper plate and pilot bearing. also the bell housing has some damage where the bearings fit. My question is , is a bell housing with a two bearing support or a single bearing and a pilot bearing the better option. that seems to be the difference between the two models 430 A or B. I'll be buying the whole setup for one or the other.

It should not make any difference between the A and B engine. The "flywheel cover" will be the same for either, and both use a single bearing PDS.

If you went to a double bearing PDS, the flywheel must change to the 153 tooth ring gear.

Pros and Cons:

Single bearing PDS requires the crankshaft centering bushing.
The single bearing PDS is removable from AFT without the need to remove the engine.
This PDS uses a non-serviceable sealed bearing.


The double bearing PDS does not require the crankshaft centering bushing.
The double PDS is removable from AFT but only with engine removal.
These PDS bearings are serviceable via a grease port, and use "open" bearings.

While I like the idea of the serviceable bearings, I think that being able to remove the PDS w/out engine removal, and staying with the same flywheel diameter, would be your best bet.


BTW, if interested, I have a brand new flywheel cover in my inventory, and it is correct for your model.

I feel bad. I just bought one on ebay and would of bought the whole set up from you if I had seen this first. You are very helpful and your knowledge and willingness to help others is not easily found these days.THANK YOU. Do you have steering fork bushings and riser gaskets for a 430-b/SP-C and maybe U-joints? BTW would you recommend drilling a grease port on the bell housing and using a open bearing to make it sorta serviceable?

We have discussed adding a grease port and an open bearing on another boating forum.
One issue is that there's no web in the casting for the grease porting, as there is with the red double PDS flywheel cover.

Here's a drawing that I made that shows what I believe would work.
Note that the cover itself will need to be bored for the grease gun extension hose to pass through it.
The hose itself would thread directly into the bearing box portion.
This would be 1/8" TP threads.... same as the grease gun extension hose threads.
The bearing on the PDS will be a 6206 2RS. You can pick the seals from it, and it will essentially become an open 6206.
The AFT seal (SEQ #7) installs in the non-conventional direction...... (i.e., seal lip and tension spring exposed towards the rear)

BTW, many of the older 4 and 6 cylinder Volvo Pentas were equipped with a single bearing PDS.
These were grease ported as well, and is basically what you'd be creating by adding the grease hose.

Here are two older flywheel covers, single bearing PDS, w/ grease ports.
The difference is, this porting is cast into the aluminum housing.
