"Hello-
I have a '98 4.3 in my boat. At idle, there is a noise coming from the front of the engine. It sounds like a loose timing chain. However, the engine is still in time and runs great. When you raise the throttle, the noise goes away.
Is this a problem w/ these motors? Could it be something else? If it needs to be replaced, do I need to remove the pan in order to remove the timing cover?
Thanks for your help."

Mike;
Seems like the answer is clear.
And you can remove the timing cover without an engine R&R; assuming you can get to the damper pulley with a puller to get it off.

"Ok, do I need to drop the oil pan in order to remove the timing cover? Or is there enough room to remove the damper, unbolt the cover and lift the cover out/away from the pan gasket on the bottom?
thanks,
Mike"

"you don't need to pull th

"you don't need to pull the pan to remove the cover, with the damper off, there's lots of room to lift the cover up and off...but with that bottom cover seal it can be a bit of a bugger to get the timing cover back on with the pan in place depending on how much room in your hull...and there's some risk of leaks doing it in place fitting the bottom seal. But take it off and see- maybe you'll decide to pull the engine once you see what is awry in there..and if not, it can be done in place."
