"It all depends on what kind of a gambler you are. I would probably remove the heads first and have a look inside, but on the long run you will usually be better off with fresh power (rebuilt engine).

"pull the outdrive and try turning the engine over before you convince yourself the engine is what is seized. It could be a gimbal bearing or drive that is locked up. With serpentine belts, even a failed alternator can lock an engine solid."

"Pulled outdrive and can still not get it to move. I also pulled the manifolds and looked real bad.
I know everyone has there opion on using a car motor.

I would think since I have all the marine parts from my seized motor - I could pick up an auto 4.3 and maybe change the camshaft and intake manifold. Then also use all the other parts off of my seized motor, carb, water pump, alternator etc.

Any thoughts?"

"If you do all the work yourself and get enough good parts from the existing engine, you will probably come out ahead in dollars out of pocket.
However... reuilt long blocks come with warranties. BTW...freeze out plugs will probably need to be replaced and you can't swap them from the old engine."

"If not repowering with a complete new motor, I'd definitely do the car engine thing.. I'm just not a fan of rebuilds, unless I do it myself and even then the human error margin can bite you. For me it's new, or used.

- as far as a used long block goes, a compression test and check of oil pressure at cranking will make it almost no gamble when looking at a candidate. just make sure it's an exact match as far as having a fuel pump mount etc..and make sure the 1 pc vs. 2 pc rear seal line doesn't get crossed.

And you need to know if your motor is balance shaft or not. There were a lot of different 4.3's.
Swap cam, use new lifters, install brass core plugs, and swap ALL external marine parts.

Might as well get the heads checked over, new valve seals at least and throw a set of good marine compatible head gaskets in like Fel Pro with the stainless fire rings. You can buy the Pioneer brand brass core plug kit for a small block chevy for around $25 at an auto parts store."

"I checked with some friends at a local parts yard. I can get a running Auto 4.3 with 11K miles on it for $1000 dollars.

1. Swap my Cam into it
2. Brass Freeze Plugs $25.00
3. Swap my intake manifold
4. New Marine Water pump $75.00
5. My existing Carb, Fuel system, alternator and starter
6. New Exhaust Manifolds and Risers $500.00

So I am probably looking at about $1600 total.

What will a balanced shaft make a difference on. Do all 4.3 turn the same way - or am I missing the point here?

Thanks!"
