43 MPI turns over on its own

"I have twin replacement 4.3 M

"I have twin replacement 4.3 MPI's in my Rinker. If the battery is low the engine will turn over on its own. If I turn the key on, it will start and the starter will stop. I have to shut off the battery switch off to avoid the problem. This does not occur with a fully charged battery.

Any ideas?

First time it happened to me I was in the very tight engine compartment (well half in is about all that fits) working on the starboard engine. Scared the heck out of me.}"

"Do you keep your outdrive in neutral when not running? If yes, and since the engine is a replacement, then let's assume that it is not the problem.

The first thing that comes to mind is the ignition switch and wiring. Since the engine only cranks then I would inspect the wiring and ign. key terminals for corrosion. Pay particular attention to the yellow/red stripe wire since it supplies voltage to the slave solenoid that sends voltage to the starter solenoid telling it to engage the starter.

If the engine turns over while in gear then that sends the troubleshooting in a slightly different direction."

"I do keep it in neutral. I may kick it into forward to see if that stops it from cranking as a very short term solution.

I will check the wiring, but any thoughts on why the battery condition may play a role?

Coincidence? Why is the battery run down? Is the starter cranking the engine when you are gone?

I'll believe just about any electrical symptom. While in the military 40 years ago working on pulse and range radars and the control center for HAWK missile batteries, I saw some strange symptoms for corrosion problems in a high moisture environment. Mold growth on slip ring brushes was the strangest."
 
low voltage can stick solenoid

low voltage can stick solenoid closed . not sure why it engages by itself but partially drained battery will cause solenoid to stick closed.it produces high amperage when batt low and contacts can weld themself closed. old ford trucks were known for this.
