TOTALLY NEW TO THE SITE THANKS

TOTALLY NEW TO THE SITE THANKS IN ADVANCE I HAVE A 1993 4.3L CARBORATED VORTEC WITH A MERCRUISER ALPHA ONE STERNDRIVE IN A 22 FT BAYLINER WITH 290 HRS ON IT. I GOT THE BOAT RECENTLY WITH NO HISTORY OTHER THAN ITS BEEN SITTING FOR 5 TO 6 YEARS SINCE THE OWNER PASSED AWAY THE ENGINE IS LOCKED UP AS FAR AS I CAN TELL IS THERE AN EASY WAY TO SPLIT THE STERNDRIVE FROM THE ENGINE JUST SO I CAN TELL IF ITS ACTUALLY LOCKED UP IN THE ENGINE OR THE STERNDRIVE DO I HAVE TO PULL THE STERNDRIVE TO DO THIS? ALSO IF NEEDED i HAVE A COMPLETELY REBUILT (RINGS/PISTONS/VALVES ETC) 4.3L VORTEC W/EFI THAT CAME OUT 1994 JIMMY I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A BALANCED ENGINE IS THIS A FEASIBLE SWAP? THANK YOU

"first.. no caps lock please.

"first.. no caps lock please.

the drive is easy to pull, put the shifter in forward(full throttle not necessary) remove the 6 Locking nuts(nylock) and detach the lifting rams and pull the drive and remove, if it's a little stuck put a 2x4 or 4x4 under the Skeg and drop it about 6-12", that should pop it loose. Careful using prybars and long screwdrivers.

Remove all the spark plugs, spray some Rust Breaker in all the plug holes, let it sit for 15 mins.. spray again, let sit for 30 mins, spray again.

Grab a 3/4" socket, put on the bottom pulley center bolt and with a LONG wrench try to turn it clock wise.. if it moves you may need a new starter.

Personally I wouldn't use an engine from a car/truck unless it had <50,000 miles on it. Besides you'll need to check or change the freeze plugs and make sure they are brass. Use a Marine starter and Altenator as they are protected.

Yea the Balanced 4.3L is typically a Vortec but the Vortec heads can go on an earlier engine, just the earlier engines dont use Roller Lifters.

the 4bbl Carbed Vortec new can get 210hp.

I bought a Vortec long block (no intake, oil pan, valve covers) for $2100 either late 2007 or early 2008, I forget."

"Thank You! it was as easy as

"Thank You! it was as easy as you said. the stern drive came right out. the 4.3 is the culprit and is seized up. Ive had the plugs out for a couple of weeks and have been soaking the cylinders in a penetrating oil and a rust breaking oil and wrenching on the bottom pully to no avail. Im pulling the heads next to see if there is anything i can see there. Im set up to pull the engine after that, and if I do so im committed to the rebuilt 4.3 I already have Its surly got 120000 miles on it overall but less than 5000 since the complete rebuild. thanks again"

"I would if you can afford it

"I would if you can afford it replace the motor with a 350 vortec. Purchase a rebiult long block and look for all the extras such as manifolds and intake and carb, and ignition from a cheap source and get the real power you need for a boat that size. Probably could get out of it for about $3000.00 or so if you do your research!!

A remanufatured 4.3 long block should run you about $2000.00 ish."
