40hp evil 4stroke 2007

Hey guys need a little help took the boat out today for first time this year and ran fine. But on my way back motor stopped abruptly almost like I hit something but I didn't. Restarted and same thing within 10 seconds. Idles fine but when I put in gear the motor acts like it locks up. Idled in to boat ramp but didn't make it. Sounds like bearing in lower unit is squealing. Finally got home and dumped oil from lower unit. No water no metal shavings. ????? I'm pretty sure I have a bearing locking up. But I open for suggestions. If it is a bearing can I repair this myself?

Start by removing the lower unit and see if the problem is in there or the powerhead.--When and how was oil in the lower unit changed last ?

Sorry for the delay, lost wifi. Oil changed last year pushed from bottom out of the top. I have to check and see but motor might be in warranty. I had a 5 year extended warranty that I think ends next month. I hate to pull the unit til I know for sure so I don't void anything.

So you feel that this is a gearcase issue and not an engine related issue?
