"Hi I have a merc 40hp 2 stroke 2 cyl wiv electronic ign, it threw a big end and I have replaced the crank, one conrod and bearings after putting it back together it just will not go and the timing is always miles to far retarded and it just backfires into the exhaust.
no matter what position i put the flywheel in nothing changes, does anyone have any idea what this could be please?"
 
How is the keyway for the flyw

How is the keyway for the flywheel? When it went bang and quit did it stop real sudden? Might have moved the trigger wheel.

Fly wheel should only go on in one way. It must also have a clean contact with the crank shaft taper of over 80%. Clean the burrs off and use rubbing compound to get the right contact and get a new key from merc.

"Hi thanks for the info and you are pretty close to what I have found, the crank I used is a second hand one and the key was for some reason soft and had stripped after the first turn, made a new key and bingo away she went, sometimes you just canoot see the wood for the tree's hey!!
