I have a 40D tohatsu that sputters at high throttle then after a while it clears up. I use approved plugs and new fuel. The motor is about 8 yrd old. What can I do to remedy this situation. What adjustments are necessary, How do I clean the carb if necessary

Start by verifying ignition, setting synchronization, and cleaning the carbs. Full info is in the Factory service manual, available at any dealer, including me.

See the thread:"NS40C whats normal", before spending any money. The manual was a grave disappointment. I will help as much as I can. If you find anyone that has a clue about these motors, please inform me. Good luck, you'll need it. TIMINATOR

Is the manual any better? Parts availability? Did they get it right after experimenting on the older ones? GM,Ford, etc. make fubars, but they update/supercede the bad parts. On several boards, and the 'net is WORLD WIDE, nobody including dealers apparently has a clue. I feel like we have been hung out to dry. Just sayin'. Been getting a LOT of feedback about this, little knowledge, but a lot of sympathy, and comments. We live, we learn, we try not to make the same mistake again. Bitter? Me? Yup! TIMINATOR

"Is the manual any better?"

What manual do you have?

As far as qualified people to repair them...Tons of people can as the engine is so simple to work on that a savage with no education can fix one with a voodo spell and a rock hammer.

Parts availabilty...All parts are available for the 40 C. Some individual items require a sub system upgrade as the ignition system has changed.

Neither dealer in the valley here or the several that I contacted in Havasu want to touch it. They asked what has been tried, and tell me there isn't anything else that they would do, except the one dealer that said he would redo everything done so far. He wanted $500.00-$600.00 up front with no guarentees. Not gonna do that. I have the factory Nissan/Tohatsu manual ordered by part# provided here on the board. The dealer also said it is the correct one before he ordered it. TIMINATOR

Simply put, you have missed something in your troubleshooting. The one dealer who told you that he would redo everything that you have done is being straight up honest with you and that is the same procedure that we would use if you brought the engine into us. People bring engines into us all the time saying they have cleaned the carbs, yet they are full of varnish. People say that they have fire on the plugs and yet when we test them they have no fire or are weak on one. People say that they have great compression and then we find that they are weak or none on one cylinder( On a side note I had a four cylinder Chrysler once that came in for a tune-up...It had no compression on number three...It had no piston on number three...I mean no piston at all in that it had been removed by someone). My point is that you probably didn't check something minor, something looks good that isn't or you are just unlucky. Sometimes a problem is so obvious that an idiot spots it right away and an expert just doesn't see it. I would urge you to let someone else look at it with a fresh perspective and no prior prejudice as to what you have already done to troubleshoot it. That engine model is solid and doing a search on the net will not turn up any kind of design problems or any amount of people who have had a problem that couldn't be fixed.
