402 Mercury - engine will not shut down when ignition is turned off

I just bought an old 1977 Starcraft 14 foot V Hull in relativity very nice shape equipped with a Mercury 402 outboard. As I have been told the motor was bought new with that boat in 1977. Seems to run very nice. The only problem is that the motor will not shut off when key switch is turned off. Have to shut it down by chocking it. I am brand new to boat ownership. Any ideas? Thanks to everyone in advance.

The 'kill wire' on the switch box for them is either orange or black with a yellow tracer. Locate it and find out why it's not being shorted out with the key off.
