400 Stringer "Slips", clunks, and bogs down the engine

I have a 1983 2.5 litre OMC with the 400 stringer outdrive. I had problems with the remote control sticking, and difficulty returning it to neutral; had to use extreme force to return it back into neutral. I removed the cables and found that one of the remote control cables was pinched under a nut/bolt which supports an interior panel.

When underway I felt and heard an intermittent "clunking", as if the outdrive falls out of gear and engauges back violently. I inspected the cables inside the shift converter, and they look good. The overstroke switches have continuity, though they do not interrupt the motor RPM as the manual says they should. Small possibility that this could be cable adjustment issue; I've read the Manual and it's confusing!

The "clunking" worsened. Now at full throttle the motor begins to bog down.I drained the gearcase oil. The intermediate housing was a little dirty. The upper gearcase was clean. The lower gearcase was very metallic with shreds collecting on the magnetic pick-up of the drain plug.

Could this be be a clutch dog or more than that??

Anyone know of an OMC experienced marine mechanic here in the Atlanta or Lake Hartwell area? I've got to get this boat out of my driveway and make a repair or junk it decision!
