I've got the whole thing ready to come off except the top of the shifting rod.the whole ass'y is hard to get at. Am i tapping out the little pin, or is there some snakey way to get this apart without ending up with broken parts?

That pin doesn't "tap" out. If it's the style I'm thinking of, there's a plastic arm that un-clips on the side of the pin, and then you just pull it out.

Looks like this. shift.jpg

No if's and's about it. They are a pain to get at and I surely don't miss this part of the job much. It does help if you put the engine in forward gear though, because it will raise the arm up and give you a little more clearance.
