"Kirby, can tell you right off

"Kirby, can tell you right off that the 6E9 tells me that you have a Yamaha built Mariner produced between 81 and 89.

Regardless of the exact model year, Yamaha used the same pair of carbs (different part number for upper and lower) on all the 6E9, 40 horse series.

Merc still stocks a carb kit, which has parts to do both carbs, part number 97667T, just don't be surprised when the dealer tells you it sells for about 180 bucks.

Some of the individual components are still available separately, so you if you pull the carbs, clean them and determine what exactly needs replacing, your wallet may thank you...

The waterpump kit (part number 84363T) is also available - complete kit about 100 bucks. Just the impeller (47-99971M) sells for a little over 50 bucks.

The prices are a little steeper on these Japanese built Mariners. If you have a Yamaha dealer close by that is willing to take a minute to cross ref for you, you can usually get parts from them considerably cheaper.

Your particular model is identical to Yamaha's own 40 horse models, 40FM/40FE/40FEML that were produced between 1981-83...."
